About Poi

Poi are one of the most popular flow props in the world, consisting of weights attached to tethers that are swung rhythmically. They are usually used in sets of two, although three or more can be used for more complex spinning or juggling styles of poi flow. They come in a wide range of styles, from simple sock poi for beginners to elaborate fire and LED poi for experienced performers.

Poi spinning involves swinging the heads in various directions and timing, creating complex geometric shapes. The most common combinations are Same Direction Same Timing, Opposite Direction Same Timing, Same Direction Different Timing, Opposite Direction Different Timing.

Contact poi are a common style of poi nowadays, because the weighting allows for cleaner stalls and tosses. Other common types are glowstick style, snake poi, and stingers. Fabric poi are generally recommended for complete beginners because they don’t hurt as much when you hit yourself during the learning phase.
