Our Monkey Fist Fire Poi combine this time-tested wick design with modern Technora tethers for a durable, customizable setup. Choose between two head sizes, relaxed or semi-static Technora rope, and your preferred connection style to build a pair of fire poi that matches your flow.

Classic Monkey Fist Fire Heads

Monkey Fist heads feature tightly knotted, 100% Kevlar wick without fiberglass blended into the material. Their dense construction provides plenty of fuel capacity and a substantial spinning feel.

  • 3.15 inch (80 mm): The smaller option weighs approximately 5.60 oz (159 g) per head. It offers a slightly lighter, more maneuverable feel while maintaining the characteristic weight and fuel capacity of a Monkey Fist.
  • 3.75 inch (95 mm): The larger option weighs approximately 6.40 oz (181 g) per head. Its additional Kevlar provides greater fuel capacity and the potential for longer burns, along with more spinning momentum.

Both sizes offer the familiar round profile and substantial feel that have made Monkey Fists a staple of fire poi for years.

Choose Your Technora Tether

Customize how your poi move with two different Technora tether options:

  • Relaxed 5 mm Technora: A softer, more flexible tether with a loose, fluid feel. Great for spinners who prefer natural rope movement without much added structure.
  • Semi-Static 8 mm Technora: A firmer tether that maintains more of its shape while retaining some flexibility. The added structure provides more feedback and predictability, particularly during tosses, stalls, and technical movements.

Why Technora?

Technora is a high-performance aramid fiber known for its exceptional strength, abrasion resistance, and heat resistance. It provides a durable alternative to traditional metal chain tethers while offering a smoother, more comfortable spinning experience.

Fire Safety & Maintenance

Proper care is essential for maintaining the safety and longevity of your fire poi. Technora is heat resistant, but it is not fireproof.

  • Never soak Technora tethers in fuel. Only the Kevlar wick heads should be fueled.
  • Avoid leaving burning poi stationary on the ground, as prolonged heat exposure can damage the tethers and surrounding materials.
  • Inspect your Kevlar heads, Technora tethers, and connection hardware before every use.
  • Replace any tether showing signs of fraying, excessive wear, heat damage, or compromised connections.
  • With proper care, Technora tethers can often outlast the Kevlar heads themselves.

Flow toys are props and tools used in flow arts, which is a movement based art-form that involves object manipulation. Flow props are extensions of your body and tools for self expression.

Despite being called “toys”, flow toys are meant for everyone and you will find that a majority of flow artists are actually adults! Contemporary flow arts include many modalities like dance, martial arts, or just “free-flow.”

The best flow toy to start with is the one that you’re most excited to learn. Although some props might be more difficult to learn than others, this differs greatly from one person to another. We found that the more excited you are to learn a specific prop, the more likely you will be to practice and learn quickly.

Stick props like dragon staff, contact staff, or spin staff can be easier for some since its a more static prop that you can hold onto. Rope props like poi and rope dart require more plane control at the beginning but are also much easier to travel with. Others like flow stars and pixel whips have their own kind of movements that don’t really fall into the other two categories we mentioned. But they’re super popular for ravers and festival goers!

We have a feeling you’ll end up owning more than one type of prop though so regardless of what your friend thinks is the best flow toy to start with, just get whatever you’re most excited to learn!

Fire dancing carries some inherent risks, but if you follow all of our fire safety instructions the risks are very avoidable. We recommend feeling super comfortable with a flow toy before lighting it on fire for the first time.

If you’re new to flow arts, we also recommend getting a daytime practice prop (or even LED prop) since you might be dropping your flow toy a lot when you’re first learning. The Kevlar on fire props can deteriorate much more quickly from repetitive drops, so practice props are ideal to keep them safe.

We have fire, LED, and daytime versions of most of our main props. Even if you can only afford one version and end up starting with a fire prop, they can be protected with wick covers. No matter what type you have, we recommend practicing on soft ground like grass to protect them as much as possible.

Ground shipping in the US usually takes about 3-5 business days from shipping date, while priority shipping can be between 1-3 business days from shipping date. Poi are one of the most popular flow props in the world, consisting of weights attached to tethers that are swung rhythmically. They are usually used in sets of two, although three or more can be used for more complex spinning or juggling styles of poi flow. They come in a wide range of styles, from simple sock poi for beginners to elaborate fire and LED poi for experienced performers.

Poi spinning involves swinging the heads in various directions and timing, creating complex geometric shapes. The most common combinations are Same Direction Same Timing, Opposite Direction Same Timing, Same Direction Different Timing, Opposite Direction Different Timing.
