This adapter kit lets you choose the hub system and spoke type that fit your setup, whether you’re building a pure dragon staff or adding dragon spokes to a compatible contact staff with end wicks.

Choose between budget-friendly Bonobo Flow clamp hubs, versatile Threeworlds V3 clamp hubs, or lightweight Threeworlds Ultra pressure-fit hubs. All three hub systems use compatible spoke connections, allowing you to choose from Bonobo Flow and Threeworlds fire spokes, Lumi LED Spokes, or Spiral Dragon Claws.

Choose Your Dragon Staff Hubs

  • Bonobo Flow Hubs: Our most budget-friendly option and the heaviest of the three at 4.5 oz (128g) per hub. These two-piece hubs clamp around the outside of compatible 22mm (7/8″) tubing and can be separated for installation around staffs with end wicks. A great choice if you prefer more end weight and want broad compatibility without paying for a pressure-fit system.
  • Threeworlds V3 Hubs: A versatile 7075 aluminum clamp hub that installs around compatible 22mm (7/8″) tubing. V3 Hubs are lighter than Bonobo Flow Hubs while retaining the ability to install them around compatible contact staffs and other end-wick setups. They can also be adapted for compatible 19mm (3/4″) OD tubing using optional V3 Hub Spacers.
  • Threeworlds Ultra Hubs: The lightest and quickest hub option. Ultra Hubs use the Threeworlds Fusion pressure-fit system, allowing the complete hub and spoke assembly to be attached or removed with a quick twist. They require compatible tubing with a 19mm internal diameter and cannot clamp around contact staffs like the Bonobo Flow or V3 Hubs.

Choose Your Spokes

  • Fire Spokes: Steel bridge cable spokes wrapped with Kevlar wick. The slight flexibility of the cable helps absorb impact from drops and hard landings.
  • Spiral Dragon Claws: Polyurethane daytime practice spokes available in multiple colors. Their spiral shape creates a unique visual pattern as your dragon staff rotates.
  • Lumi LED Spokes: Polycarbonate LED spokes powered by rechargeable Threeworlds Lumi light units for turning the same hub system into an LED dragon staff.

6, 8, or 10 Head Configurations

Each hub accepts either 3 or 4 spokes, giving a pure dragon staff a total of 6 or 8 heads. When Bonobo Flow or V3 clamp hubs are installed on a compatible contact staff or staff core with two end wicks, a 4-spoke-per-hub configuration creates a 10 head fire dragon staff with 8 spokes plus the 2 end wicks.

Clamp Hubs vs. Pressure-Fit Hubs

Bonobo Flow and Threeworlds V3 Hubs clamp around the outside of the staff tube. This makes them particularly versatile because the two-piece hubs can be installed around staffs with end wicks rather than requiring access to the open end of the tube.

Threeworlds Ultra Hubs use the Fusion pressure-fit system instead. A connector installs inside the staff tubing, allowing the entire hub and spoke assembly to quickly twist on and off. This makes the Ultra system lighter and faster to assemble or remove, but requires a compatible staff core with a 3/4 inch (19mm) internal diameter.

Optional Add-Ons

  • 22mm Removable End Caps: Insert inside compatible hollow tubing to reinforce the staff core and protect it from the clamping pressure of Bonobo Flow or V3 Hubs. These require tubing with a 19mm internal diameter.
  • Fusion Quick-Release End Caps: Add a Fusion pressure-fit connection to a compatible V3 setup, allowing the V3 Hubs to be quickly attached and removed while retaining the option to use them as traditional clamp hubs when needed.
  • V3 Hub Spacers: Adapt Threeworlds V3 Hubs for use with compatible 19mm (3/4″) OD staff tubing.

One Hub System, Multiple Dragons

Flow toys are props and tools used in flow arts, which is a movement based art-form that involves object manipulation. Flow props are extensions of your body and tools for self expression.

Despite being called “toys”, flow toys are meant for everyone and you will find that a majority of flow artists are actually adults! Contemporary flow arts include many modalities like dance, martial arts, or just “free-flow.”

The best flow toy to start with is the one that you’re most excited to learn. Although some props might be more difficult to learn than others, this differs greatly from one person to another. We found that the more excited you are to learn a specific prop, the more likely you will be to practice and learn quickly.

Stick props like dragon staff, contact staff, or spin staff can be easier for some since its a more static prop that you can hold onto. Rope props like poi and rope dart require more plane control at the beginning but are also much easier to travel with. Others like flow stars and pixel whips have their own kind of movements that don’t really fall into the other two categories we mentioned. But they’re super popular for ravers and festival goers!

We have a feeling you’ll end up owning more than one type of prop though so regardless of what your friend thinks is the best flow toy to start with, just get whatever you’re most excited to learn!

Fire dancing carries some inherent risks, but if you follow all of our fire safety instructions the risks are very avoidable. We recommend feeling super comfortable with a flow toy before lighting it on fire for the first time.

If you’re new to flow arts, we also recommend getting a daytime practice prop (or even LED prop) since you might be dropping your flow toy a lot when you’re first learning. The Kevlar on fire props can deteriorate much more quickly from repetitive drops, so practice props are ideal to keep them safe.

We have fire, LED, and daytime versions of most of our main props. Even if you can only afford one version and end up starting with a fire prop, they can be protected with wick covers. No matter what type you have, we recommend practicing on soft ground like grass to protect them as much as possible.
