Some fire poi are built for endurance. The Shuriken Fire Poi are built to steal the show. Featuring oversized, multi-blade Kevlar heads that maximize exposed wick surface area and airflow, these fire poi produce enormous flames for performers who prioritize visual impact over extended burn times.

Unlike traditional fire poi heads that concentrate their wick into compact knots or bundles, the Shuriken features multiple exposed Kevlar blades extending outward from the center. This distinctive construction allows more air to circulate around the wick, creating larger flames and a dramatic fire effect.

Available in 5, 6, or 7 blade configurations, the Shuriken Fire Poi can be customized with your choice of relaxed or semi-static Technora tethers, adjustable tether lengths, direct-connect or quick-link attachments, and optional PX3 Poi Knobs.

Important: The Shuriken is designed for short, high-impact fire performances. Its exposed wick construction is more susceptible to heat damage during prolonged burns, making proper fuel selection and burn duration especially important.

Designed for Maximum Flame Size

The Shuriken’s distinctive multi-blade construction sets it apart from traditional fire poi. Instead of concentrating the wick into a compact head, its blades extend outward to expose more Kevlar to the surrounding air.

This design creates several performance advantages:

  • Massive Flame Profile: The exposed blades increase airflow around the wick, helping produce larger, more dramatic flames.
  • High Surface Area: The multi-point construction exposes more wick material to oxygen, supporting an intense fire effect.
  • Substantial Momentum: The oversized heads provide significant weight for traditional spinning, stalls, tosses, and other poi techniques.
  • Three Blade Configurations: Choose between 5, 6, or 7 blades depending on your preferred weight and visual profile.
  • 100% Kevlar Wick: Constructed using pure Kevlar wick without fiberglass blended into the fibers.

The Shuriken is particularly well suited for experienced fire performers who want a substantial spinning feel and maximum visual impact. Its larger size and weight require greater control when accelerating, redirecting, and stopping the poi.

Choose Your Shuriken Heads

All three Shuriken configurations measure approximately 6 inch (15.2 cm) across and 3 inch (7.6 cm) thick. The number of blades determines the overall head weight and wick configuration.

  • 5 Blade: 8.30 oz (235 g) per head. The lightest configuration, offering substantial flames with less weight than the larger versions.
  • 6 Blade: 9.70 oz (275 g) per head. A middle-ground option for performers who want additional wick material and spinning momentum.
  • 7 Blade: 11.10 oz (315 g) per head. The heaviest configuration, featuring the greatest number of exposed wick blades.

Each pair includes two matching Shuriken heads in your selected blade configuration.

Choose Your Technora Tethers

Customize how your Shuriken Fire Poi handle with two different Technora tether options. Technora is a high-performance aramid fiber known for its strength, durability, and resistance to elevated temperatures.

  • Relaxed 5 mm Technora: A thinner, more flexible tether that moves freely and provides a soft, fluid spinning feel. Ideal for spinners who prefer natural rope movement with minimal structure.
  • Semi-Static 8 mm Technora: A thicker, firmer tether that maintains more of its shape during movement. The additional structure provides greater feedback and predictability during tosses, stalls, and other technical movements.

Both options provide a durable alternative to traditional metal chain tethers, eliminating the long sections of metal chain that can become dangerously hot during fire spinning.

Not sure which tether fits your style? Check out our Guide to Relaxed, Semi-Static, and Static Poi Tethers.

Connection Options

Choose how your Technora tethers attach to the Shuriken heads:

  • Quick Link: A removable metal connector that allows you to detach or swap your fire heads without replacing the tether. Ideal for spinners who frequently change heads or prefer a modular setup.
  • Direct Connect: The Technora tether attaches directly to the fire head without an intermediate quick link. This creates a cleaner connection with less unwanted movement, making it a great option for spinners who prioritize precision.

Optional Poi Knobs

Complete your Shuriken Fire Poi with a pair of PX3 Poi Knobs, or select no knobs if you already have handles you prefer.

PX3 knobs provide a comfortable grip for traditional spinning while supporting tosses, catches, and other handle-based techniques. They’re available in multiple colors to match your setup.

Choosing Your Poi Length

We recommend starting with a tether length measured from your palm to your shoulder crease. This provides a comfortable, versatile length for most spinning styles, although personal preference may vary.

For more detailed sizing instructions, check out our What Length Should My Poi Be? Guide.

Important Fuel & Burn Time Guidelines

The Shuriken Fire Poi are designed for short, high-impact performances. They are not intended for extended-duration fire spinning.

Because the Shuriken’s blades expose a large amount of Kevlar to the surrounding air, they generate substantial flames and heat. Prolonged burning can cause the wick to overheat, accelerate Kevlar degradation, and significantly shorten the lifespan of the heads.

  • Recommended Fuel: White gas is our preferred fuel for the Shuriken because its relatively short burn duration is better suited to the exposed wick construction.
  • Alternative Fuels: If white gas is unavailable in your country or cannot reasonably be sourced, a suitable lighter fluid may be used as an alternative, provided it is compatible with your fire equipment and local safety requirements.
  • Avoid Oil-Based Fuels: We strongly discourage using oil-based fuels such as kerosene or lamp oil. Their prolonged burns can expose the Shuriken’s wick structure to excessive heat, causing accelerated degradation and potentially premature failure.
  • Maximum Burn Duration: When using an alternative fuel that burns longer than white gas, extinguish the Shuriken within 2 to 3 minutes. Never intentionally continue a burn beyond 3 minutes.
  • Extinguish Before Burnout: Regardless of fuel type, we recommend extinguishing the Shuriken before it burns out naturally. Even with white gas, this may mean putting it out after approximately 2.5 minutes or sooner, depending on the burn.
  • Monitor Wick Condition: If the flames diminish significantly, the wick begins glowing excessively, or the heads show signs of overheating, extinguish them immediately rather than waiting for the remaining fuel to burn away.

Important: The 3-minute limit is a maximum, not a recommended target. Actual safe burn duration depends on the fuel, environmental conditions, wick condition, and flame intensity. Extinguish the prop sooner whenever necessary.

Due to their exposed wick construction and intense flames, Shuriken heads will generally have a shorter service life than more compact fire poi heads. Proper fuel selection, shorter burns, and regular maintenance are essential for preserving the wick.

Fire Safety & Maintenance

The Shuriken produces particularly large flames and should only be used by performers with appropriate fire safety training, equipment, and adequate spinning space. Its exposed blades are more vulnerable to prolonged heat exposure than traditional compact fire heads.

  • Fuel Selection: White gas is recommended. Avoid oil-based fuels, which can cause prolonged burns and accelerate wick degradation.
  • Burn Duration: Extinguish the Shuriken before it burns out naturally. Never exceed 3 minutes of continuous burning.
  • Prevent Overheating: Extinguish immediately if the wick begins glowing excessively, shows signs of heat damage, or produces unusually intense localized heat.
  • Fuel the Wick Only: Never soak Technora tethers in fuel.
  • Remove Excess Fuel: Properly remove excess fuel before lighting to reduce the risk of burning fuel being thrown during spinning.
  • Inspect the Blades: Check each wick blade for fraying, deterioration, loose construction, or other damage before every use.
  • Inspect the Tethers: Check the Technora ropes, connections, and optional quick links for wear or damage before every use.
  • Protect the Tethers: Keep Technora away from direct flames whenever possible. Although heat resistant, Technora is not fireproof.
  • Secure Connections: Ensure all quick links are fully closed and securely tightened before spinning.
  • Practice Unlit: Master new techniques without fire before attempting them with a burning Shuriken.
  • Use a Safety Spotter: Always have an appropriately trained safety person and suitable extinguishing equipment available during fire performances.

Flow toys are props and tools used in flow arts, which is a movement based art-form that involves object manipulation. Flow props are extensions of your body and tools for self expression.

Despite being called “toys”, flow toys are meant for everyone and you will find that a majority of flow artists are actually adults! Contemporary flow arts include many modalities like dance, martial arts, or just “free-flow.”

The best flow toy to start with is the one that you’re most excited to learn. Although some props might be more difficult to learn than others, this differs greatly from one person to another. We found that the more excited you are to learn a specific prop, the more likely you will be to practice and learn quickly.

Stick props like dragon staff, contact staff, or spin staff can be easier for some since its a more static prop that you can hold onto. Rope props like poi and rope dart require more plane control at the beginning but are also much easier to travel with. Others like flow stars and pixel whips have their own kind of movements that don’t really fall into the other two categories we mentioned. But they’re super popular for ravers and festival goers!

We have a feeling you’ll end up owning more than one type of prop though so regardless of what your friend thinks is the best flow toy to start with, just get whatever you’re most excited to learn!

Fire dancing carries some inherent risks, but if you follow all of our fire safety instructions the risks are very avoidable. We recommend feeling super comfortable with a flow toy before lighting it on fire for the first time.

If you’re new to flow arts, we also recommend getting a daytime practice prop (or even LED prop) since you might be dropping your flow toy a lot when you’re first learning. The Kevlar on fire props can deteriorate much more quickly from repetitive drops, so practice props are ideal to keep them safe.

We have fire, LED, and daytime versions of most of our main props. Even if you can only afford one version and end up starting with a fire prop, they can be protected with wick covers. No matter what type you have, we recommend practicing on soft ground like grass to protect them as much as possible.

After you read the fire safety guide linked above and before lighting up you fire tool, please also read through our safety disclaimer.

We ship our products Monday-Friday from Los Angeles, CA, USA. Many of our listed products are ready-to-ship unless we have to assemble them, which can add a day or two to process. That being said, we ship out orders in the order they are placed within 1-2 business days (with some exceptions like holiday seasons).

Once shipped, we use USPS for orders in the USA and usually UPS for all international orders. Ground shipping in the US usually takes about 3-5 business days from shipping date, while priority shipping can be between 1-3 business days from shipping date. These are estimations and not guarantees as USPS might have delays, but reach out to us if you are looking for more specific time frames!

We can’t promise any specific shipping timeframes for international delivery as customs can cause many unforeseen delays.

Of course! We’re just a text, email, or DM away from being able to answer any question you have. All of our contact details can be found here or you can scroll down to find the buttons in our footer. We’re active on social media too so we are pretty easy to get a hold of!

Poi are one of the most popular flow props in the world, consisting of weights attached to tethers that are swung rhythmically. They are usually used in sets of two, although three or more can be used for more complex spinning or juggling styles of poi flow. They come in a wide range of styles, from simple sock poi for beginners to elaborate fire and LED poi for experienced performers.

Poi spinning involves swinging the heads in various directions and timing, creating complex geometric shapes. The most common combinations are Same Direction Same Timing, Opposite Direction Same Timing, Same Direction Different Timing, Opposite Direction Different Timing.

Contact poi are a common style of poi nowadays, because the weighting allows for cleaner stalls and tosses. Other common types are glowstick style, snake poi, and stingers. Fabric poi are generally recommended for complete beginners because they don’t hurt as much when you hit yourself during the learning phase.
