The Lycopodium Fire Show Sword is a specialized performance prop designed to create large fire trails using lycopodium powder, also known as club moss or ground pine. Its hollow construction allows powder stored inside the prop to be released through the wicked end during downward swings, creating a dramatic burst of flame as the airborne powder ignites.

Lycopodium powder is not included and is not currently sold by Bonobo Flow. You will need to source lycopodium separately to produce the intended powder effect. The optional Flow Sparks add-on is designed for use on the wick and is not a replacement for lycopodium powder inside the hollow body.

Designed for Lycopodium Fire Effects

The hollow aluminum body acts as a reservoir for lycopodium powder. Powder can be loaded through the open tip using a funnel or similar tool, then released during performance by swinging the prop downward. As the fine powder passes through the flame and disperses into the air, it creates the characteristic fire trail associated with lycopodium effects.

This is a specialized fire effect intended for experienced fire performers. Lycopodium powder can create a rapid flame effect when dispersed into the air, so proper handling, spacing, and fire safety procedures are particularly important.

Built for Fire Performance

The body is constructed from strong 7075 aluminum and wrapped with pure Kevlar tube wick along the upper section. A silicone tape grip provides a comfortable gripping surface, while a large silicone heat shield helps reduce radiant heat reaching the hand during use.

Using the Lycopodium Fire Show Sword

  • Load the Lycopodium Powder: Use a funnel or similar tool to fill the hollow body with lycopodium powder through the tip.
  • Keep the Opening Closed While Fueling: Hold the end closed while applying fuel to the wick so powder does not escape.
  • Leave the Tip Unfueled: Leave approximately the top 1/2 inch (13 mm) of wick unfueled to help prevent fuel from reaching and clumping the powder.
  • Keep It Upright: Keep the prop upright after ignition until you are ready to produce the effect.
  • Release the Powder: A controlled downward swing releases powder through the flame, producing the fire trail.
  • Extra Sparks: Flow Sparks can be applied to the wick to add sparkling effects to your performance. They are intended primarily for use on the wick, not as a substitute for lycopodium powder inside the hollow tube.

Fire Safety

Lycopodium effects require additional precautions beyond normal fire prop use because finely dispersed combustible powder can ignite rapidly. This prop is intended for experienced fire performers working in an appropriate performance environment with adequate clearance, extinguishing equipment, and a trained fire safety present.

Before using this prop, read our Fire Safety for Flow Arts guide, Fire Prop Maintenance Guide, and Safety Disclaimer.

It’s a fire prop that throws clouds of burning powder. This is very much the “know what you’re doing first” section of the catalog.

Flow toys are props and tools used in flow arts, which is a movement based art-form that involves object manipulation. Flow props are extensions of your body and tools for self expression.

Despite being called “toys”, flow toys are meant for everyone and you will find that a majority of flow artists are actually adults! Contemporary flow arts include many modalities like dance, martial arts, or just “free-flow.”

The best flow toy to start with is the one that you’re most excited to learn. Although some props might be more difficult to learn than others, this differs greatly from one person to another. We found that the more excited you are to learn a specific prop, the more likely you will be to practice and learn quickly.

Stick props like dragon staff, contact staff, or spin staff can be easier for some since its a more static prop that you can hold onto. Rope props like poi and rope dart require more plane control at the beginning but are also much easier to travel with. Others like flow stars and pixel whips have their own kind of movements that don’t really fall into the other two categories we mentioned. But they’re super popular for ravers and festival goers!

We have a feeling you’ll end up owning more than one type of prop though so regardless of what your friend thinks is the best flow toy to start with, just get whatever you’re most excited to learn!

Fire dancing carries some inherent risks, but if you follow all of our fire safety instructions the risks are very avoidable. We recommend feeling super comfortable with a flow toy before lighting it on fire for the first time.

If you’re new to flow arts, we also recommend getting a daytime practice prop (or even LED prop) since you might be dropping your flow toy a lot when you’re first learning. The Kevlar on fire props can deteriorate much more quickly from repetitive drops, so practice props are ideal to keep them safe.

We have fire, LED, and daytime versions of most of our main props. Even if you can only afford one version and end up starting with a fire prop, they can be protected with wick covers. No matter what type you have, we recommend practicing on soft ground like grass to protect them as much as possible.

After you read the fire safety guide linked above and before lighting up you fire tool, please also read through our safety disclaimer.

We ship our products Monday-Friday from Los Angeles, CA, USA. Many of our listed products are ready-to-ship unless we have to assemble them, which can add a day or two to process. That being said, we ship out orders in the order they are placed within 1-2 business days (with some exceptions like holiday seasons).

Once shipped, we use USPS for orders in the USA and usually UPS for all international orders. Ground shipping in the US usually takes about 3-5 business days from shipping date, while priority shipping can be between 1-3 business days from shipping date. These are estimations and not guarantees as USPS might have delays, but reach out to us if you are looking for more specific time frames!

We can’t promise any specific shipping timeframes for international delivery as customs can cause many unforeseen delays.

Of course! We’re just a text, email, or DM away from being able to answer any question you have. All of our contact details can be found here or you can scroll down to find the buttons in our footer. We’re active on social media too so we are pretty easy to get a hold of!

Explore our range of fire torches, specifically chosen for fire performers, dancers, and flow artists looking to enhance their routines. Our selection includes Palm Torches, Fire Eating Torches, Fire Swinging Torches, and Fire Breathing Torches, each suited for different styles and techniques.

Palm Torches are popular for both technical and expressive performances. With attachment options like handles, straps, and elastic loops, they offer comfort and flexibility. Their compact size makes them ideal for indoor use, accentuating dance movements.

Fire Swinging Torches are designed for dynamic swinging and flow inspired by dance or martial arts. Some models can be juggled, though not all are weighted for juggling. They can also double as fire breathing torches.

Fire Breathing Torches are used for fire breathing performances, facilitating safe ignition of expelled fuels. Due to significant risks, fire breathing should only be performed by trained professionals.

Fire Eating Torches are classic performance tools, typically hollow vapor torches. Performers use them to extinguish flames orally or transfer flames through vapor manipulation. This skill also requires professional training and strict safety measures.

Additionally, martial arts weapons have been around for ages and now been adopted into the flow arts and performance scene. For this selection, we have swords and nunchucks.

Martial arts style flow props can be spun in more traditional styles of movement, but they are now also used in a more interpretive style of movement that is perfect for dancers and performers. It’s fun seeing old school weapons being used in a modern way through flow arts.
