Flow Sparks is our special blend of effects powder made specifically for fire performers who want to add bright white sparks to their fire props. Apply a small amount to properly fueled and spun-off wicks, ignite your prop, and the powder produces a burst of white sparks as it burns.

Each container includes 6 oz (170g) of Flow Sparks in a secure, resealable container, because an accidental effects-powder explosion inside your prop bag is considerably less exciting than the intentional kind.

Bright White Spark Effects

Flow Sparks uses a titanium-based metal blend to produce bright white sparks without iron, steel, magnesium, or colored flame additives. It is intended as an occasional special effect for experienced fire performers rather than something that needs to go on every burn.

How to Use Flow Sparks

  • Fuel Your Wicks: Fuel your fire prop normally using an appropriate fuel.
  • Thoroughly Spin Off Excess Fuel: Remove excess fuel before applying Flow Sparks. This is especially important because effects powder can stick to excess fuel and create burning clumps that may separate from the prop.
  • Apply Sparingly: Lightly sprinkle Flow Sparks onto the fueled and spun-off wick. You do not need to bury the wick in it.
  • Ignite & Perform: Ignite the prop using your normal fire-performance procedures and maintain an appropriate performance area and trained fire safety.

Metal-based effects powders can shorten the lifespan of fire wick. As the metal particles heat and burn, they expose the wick to additional localized heat and wear compared with normal fire prop use. Flow toys are props and tools used in flow arts, which is a movement based art-form that involves object manipulation. Flow props are extensions of your body and tools for self expression.

Despite being called “toys”, flow toys are meant for everyone and you will find that a majority of flow artists are actually adults! Contemporary flow arts include many modalities like dance, martial arts, or just “free-flow.”

The best flow toy to start with is the one that you’re most excited to learn. Although some props might be more difficult to learn than others, this differs greatly from one person to another. We found that the more excited you are to learn a specific prop, the more likely you will be to practice and learn quickly.

Stick props like dragon staff, contact staff, or spin staff can be easier for some since its a more static prop that you can hold onto. Rope props like poi and rope dart require more plane control at the beginning but are also much easier to travel with. Others like flow stars and pixel whips have their own kind of movements that don’t really fall into the other two categories we mentioned. But they’re super popular for ravers and festival goers!

We have a feeling you’ll end up owning more than one type of prop though so regardless of what your friend thinks is the best flow toy to start with, just get whatever you’re most excited to learn!

Fire dancing carries some inherent risks, but if you follow all of our fire safety instructions the risks are very avoidable. We recommend feeling super comfortable with a flow toy before lighting it on fire for the first time.

If you’re new to flow arts, we also recommend getting a daytime practice prop (or even LED prop) since you might be dropping your flow toy a lot when you’re first learning. The Kevlar on fire props can deteriorate much more quickly from repetitive drops, so practice props are ideal to keep them safe.

We have fire, LED, and daytime versions of most of our main props. Even if you can only afford one version and end up starting with a fire prop, they can be protected with wick covers. No matter what type you have, we recommend practicing on soft ground like grass to protect them as much as possible.

Safety blankets are one of the three pillars of fire safety! Although they are generally called “duvetyne,” duvetyne is not the only material they can be made of. We have thoroughly tested our safety blankets to ensure they are safe to use on fire props. That being said, all blankets wear down over time and need to be replaced. Be sure not to spill fuel on them, as this creates a hazardous condition.

Avoid putting out freshly dipped fire props on the blanket because it will reduce the blanket’s lifespan. This is because freshly dipped props have a lot of fuel on them compared to fire props at the end of their burn. The fuel can accidentally be lit the next time you use the blanket, and fuel also causes the materials to wear out more quickly. Other accessories include wick covers, prop straps and bags, flow grease, and earplugs.
