PX3 Poi Knobs are compact, lightweight handles made from tough thermoplastic rubber for a secure and comfortable grip. Their simple round shape works well for traditional poi spinning, tosses, catches, and other techniques where you want a small knob handle rather than finger loops or a larger grip.

They’re a particularly popular addition to our Fabric Sock Poi, but can also be used to build or modify a variety of other poi and tethered props.

Compact Rubber Poi Knob

PX3 Knobs are made from flexible thermoplastic rubber that is tough enough for regular use while retaining some stretch. Their compact size keeps the handle end of your poi lightweight and unobtrusive while still providing a defined grip for control, tosses, and catches.

The available colors are UV reactive, giving the knobs additional visibility under blacklight.

Designed for 1/4 Inch Rope

The opening through the base of the knob is approximately 1/4 inch (6 mm), making PX3 Knobs a natural match for 1/4 inch (6 mm) poi tethers.

Because the rubber stretches, thicker 3/8 inch (10 mm) rope can also be pulled through the opening. It works, but it is a less common pairing because the compact PX3 Knob can feel relatively small compared with a thick 10 mm tether.

Washers Recommended

The inside of the knob has an open cavity where the tether knot or finished rope end sits. We recommend placing an appropriately sized washer between the rope termination and the knob to distribute the load and reduce the chance of the tether pulling back through the opening.

How to Install PX3 Poi Knobs

  1. Feed the tether through the 1/4 inch (6 mm) opening from the bottom of the knob and pull it through into the larger open cavity.
  2. Install an appropriately sized washer over the tether inside the knob.
  3. Secure the tether using a termination appropriate for the rope material and diameter.
  4. Before spinning, firmly pull on the tether to confirm that the finished end cannot pass through the washer or knob opening.

For 1/4 inch (6 mm) rope, an overhand knot can be used behind the washer. For thicker synthetic rope, the rope end can be properly heat-finished and widened where appropriate. Non-melting ropes such as Technora require a termination method suitable for that material.

Poi, Sock Poi & Levi Wands

PX3 Knobs can be used with many custom poi setups and are an especially popular handle upgrade for Fabric Sock Poi. They can also be adapted for levi wands as long as the tether is properly terminated so it cannot pull through the knob opening.

Flow toys are props and tools used in flow arts, which is a movement based art-form that involves object manipulation. Flow props are extensions of your body and tools for self expression.

Despite being called “toys”, flow toys are meant for everyone and you will find that a majority of flow artists are actually adults! Contemporary flow arts include many modalities like dance, martial arts, or just “free-flow.”

The best flow toy to start with is the one that you’re most excited to learn. Although some props might be more difficult to learn than others, this differs greatly from one person to another. We found that the more excited you are to learn a specific prop, the more likely you will be to practice and learn quickly.

Stick props like dragon staff, contact staff, or spin staff can be easier for some since its a more static prop that you can hold onto. Rope props like poi and rope dart require more plane control at the beginning but are also much easier to travel with. Others like flow stars and pixel whips have their own kind of movements that don’t really fall into the other two categories we mentioned. But they’re super popular for ravers and festival goers!

We have a feeling you’ll end up owning more than one type of prop though so regardless of what your friend thinks is the best flow toy to start with, just get whatever you’re most excited to learn!

Fire dancing carries some inherent risks, but if you follow all of our fire safety instructions the risks are very avoidable. We recommend feeling super comfortable with a flow toy before lighting it on fire for the first time.

If you’re new to flow arts, we also recommend getting a daytime practice prop (or even LED prop) since you might be dropping your flow toy a lot when you’re first learning. The Kevlar on fire props can deteriorate much more quickly from repetitive drops, so practice props are ideal to keep them safe.

We have fire, LED, and daytime versions of most of our main props. Even if you can only afford one version and end up starting with a fire prop, they can be protected with wick covers. No matter what type you have, we recommend practicing on soft ground like grass to protect them as much as possible.
