Nautical Fire Fans combine a distinctive star-shaped frame with a tech-style grip designed for controlled fan manipulation. Each fan is constructed from welded steel with a black protective coating and finished with five sewn pure Kevlar wicks.

The combination of the geometric frame and tech grip makes these particularly well suited to performers interested in technical fan movements, while still working perfectly well for more traditional fire fan flow. Grip style is largely personal preference, but tech and Russian grips can feel noticeably different in the hand.

Tech-Style Grip

Tech grips use a smaller inner ring positioned inside a larger outer ring. On the Nautical Fire Fans, the inner ring measures approximately 1.75 inch (44mm) across. Depending on your hand and finger size, you’ll typically place two to three fingers through this inner ring while manipulating the fan.

This differs from a traditional Russian-style grip, which generally uses a much larger open ring without the smaller inner ring. Russian grips are commonly held with four fingers through the ring while the thumb remains outside.

The smaller inner ring of a tech grip gives your fingers a more defined point of contact with the fan. Many performers find this makes it easier to control rotation and intentionally stop or redirect the fan while it’s spinning, which can be useful for more technical tricks and transitions.

Russian grips, on the other hand, are commonly favored for dance-oriented fan flow with larger, sweeping movements. Neither grip is inherently better. They’re different approaches to manipulating the fan, and plenty of performers develop their own style with either one.

Five Sewn Kevlar Wicks

Five flat pure Kevlar wicks are spaced around the outer edge of each fan, creating a broad arc of fire around the star-shaped frame. The wicks are sewn directly onto the frame for a clean, streamlined finish without exposed wick-mounting hardware.

Welded Steel Construction

The black coated steel frame provides a rigid structure for controlled spinning, stops, transitions, and other fan manipulation. The open star-shaped geometry also gives the fans a distinctive silhouette without adding unnecessary material throughout the center of the frame.

Before use, inspect the frame, grip, stitching, and Kevlar for damage or excessive wear. For information on fueling, wick care, and general fire prop upkeep, read our Fire Prop Maintenance Guide.

Fire fans require appropriate training, clearance, protective procedures, and a trained fire safety. Please review our Fire Safety for Flow Arts guide and Safety Disclaimer before use.

If your fan flow involves a healthy amount of spinning something very quickly and then making it stop exactly where you wanted, the tech grip gives your fingers a little more say in the matter.

Flow toys are props and tools used in flow arts, which is a movement based art-form that involves object manipulation. Flow props are extensions of your body and tools for self expression.

Despite being called “toys”, flow toys are meant for everyone and you will find that a majority of flow artists are actually adults! Contemporary flow arts include many modalities like dance, martial arts, or just “free-flow.”

The best flow toy to start with is the one that you’re most excited to learn. Although some props might be more difficult to learn than others, this differs greatly from one person to another. We found that the more excited you are to learn a specific prop, the more likely you will be to practice and learn quickly.

Stick props like dragon staff, contact staff, or spin staff can be easier for some since its a more static prop that you can hold onto. Rope props like poi and rope dart require more plane control at the beginning but are also much easier to travel with. Others like flow stars and pixel whips have their own kind of movements that don’t really fall into the other two categories we mentioned. But they’re super popular for ravers and festival goers!

We have a feeling you’ll end up owning more than one type of prop though so regardless of what your friend thinks is the best flow toy to start with, just get whatever you’re most excited to learn!

Fire dancing carries some inherent risks, but if you follow all of our fire safety instructions the risks are very avoidable. We recommend feeling super comfortable with a flow toy before lighting it on fire for the first time.

If you’re new to flow arts, we also recommend getting a daytime practice prop (or even LED prop) since you might be dropping your flow toy a lot when you’re first learning. The Kevlar on fire props can deteriorate much more quickly from repetitive drops, so practice props are ideal to keep them safe.

We have fire, LED, and daytime versions of most of our main props. Even if you can only afford one version and end up starting with a fire prop, they can be protected with wick covers. No matter what type you have, we recommend practicing on soft ground like grass to protect them as much as possible.

After you read the fire safety guide linked above and before lighting up you fire tool, please also read through our safety disclaimer.

We ship our products Monday-Friday from Los Angeles, CA, USA. Many of our listed products are ready-to-ship unless we have to assemble them, which can add a day or two to process. That being said, we ship out orders in the order they are placed within 1-2 business days (with some exceptions like holiday seasons).

Once shipped, we use USPS for orders in the USA and usually UPS for all international orders. Ground shipping in the US usually takes about 3-5 business days from shipping date, while priority shipping can be between 1-3 business days from shipping date. These are estimations and not guarantees as USPS might have delays, but reach out to us if you are looking for more specific time frames!

We can’t promise any specific shipping timeframes for international delivery as customs can cause many unforeseen delays.

Of course! We’re just a text, email, or DM away from being able to answer any question you have. All of our contact details can be found here or you can scroll down to find the buttons in our footer. We’re active on social media too so we are pretty easy to get a hold of!

Fans as flow props are rising in popularity in the performance and dance scene. Although there are many technical styles of movement that can be done with them, they can also be used in a more interpretive style that makes them perfect for dancers and performers.

Common types of fans use as flow props are silk veil fans (aka silk fans), fire fans, hand fans, feather fans, and folding fans. Silk veil fans are great for daytime use or dance and can be used like poi as well. They are gaining popularity in the festival scene as well because of their portability and vibrant colors. Fire fans are generally either russian grip or tech grip, with each variation allowing for a different feel depending on the style of flow you are aiming for. Russian grips are generally used for more dance style movements whereas tech grips are used for more technical movements where shapes are created with the fans.
