Technora 12-Strand 3/16 inch (5mm) Black is a high-strength, heat-resistant para-aramid rope well suited for fire poi, rope darts, meteor hammers, and other tethered fire props. Its 12-strand single-braid construction combines very low stretch with excellent flex fatigue resistance, while remaining spliceable for clean connections and adjustable setups.
One of the biggest advantages of Technora for fire props is getting rid of metal chain. Metal readily conducts heat and can cause contact burns after being exposed to flame. Technora does not conduct heat the same way, making it a popular alternative for fire prop tethers where hot metal against your body is generally considered a pretty bad feature.
Why Fire Artists Choose Technora
- High Heat Resistance: Technora maintains useful strength at temperatures far beyond what conventional synthetic ropes can tolerate and does not melt like materials such as nylon or Dyneema.
- No Hot Metal Tethers: Replace traditional chain with a lightweight rope tether that does not conduct heat like metal.
- Very Low Stretch: Provides a direct and predictable connection between you and your prop.
- Negligible Creep: Resists permanently lengthening when subjected to sustained loads over time.
- Excellent Flex Fatigue Resistance: Handles repeated bending and movement well, an important characteristic for spinning props.
- 12-Strand Single Braid: Flexible, spliceable construction makes it easy to create clean loops and connections without relying entirely on knots.
- Black Polyurethane Coating: Adds UV resistance while giving the rope its black finish.
Fire Poi, Rope Dart & Meteor Hammer
Technora can be used as the primary tether for fire poi and other tethered props. For fire rope darts and meteor hammers, it can be used for the entire leash or as a heat-resistant lead between another rope material and the fire head.
Using Technora for the complete leash provides heat resistance throughout the tether, while using it only as a lead allows you to pair it with a smoother rope material for the main leash while keeping the more heat-resistant Technora closest to the flame.
Spliceable 12-Strand Construction
We recommend using Brummel splices with an appropriately sized splicing fid when creating loops or connecting Technora to compatible eye bolts, swivels, handles, and other prop hardware. Splicing takes advantage of the rope’s 12-strand construction while creating a clean connection without a bulky knot.
Heat Resistance & Fire Prop Care
Technora is highly heat resistant, but it is not indestructible or fireproof. Its thermal decomposition temperature is approximately 930°F (500°C), and prolonged direct flame exposure can still damage the fibers.
When using Technora with fire props, avoid soaking the tether in fuel and minimize unnecessary direct flame exposure. Inspect your rope regularly for abrasion, cuts, glazing, damaged fibers, or other signs of wear, particularly around connections and near the fire head.
For fire artists looking to ditch metal chain without giving up strength or heat resistance, Technora has become one of our favorite tether materials. Strong, lightweight, spliceable, and significantly less interested in branding a hot chain pattern into your arm.
