Silicone Tape is one of those small supplies that ends up doing a surprising amount of work in a flow prop kit. This self-fusing, heat-resistant tape bonds to itself without adhesive, making it useful for securing staff flowers, finishing fire props, protecting exposed areas, and handling a variety of small repairs and modifications.

Available in black or clear, each roll measures 1 inch (25 mm) wide and 10 ft (3 m) long. Black is particularly useful around fire props, while clear works well anywhere you want LEDs or the original finish of the prop to remain visible.

Self-Fusing Without Adhesive

Unlike conventional tape, silicone tape does not rely on a sticky adhesive backing. Stretching and overlapping the tape causes the layers to fuse to one another, creating a secure silicone wrap without leaving adhesive residue underneath.

For the strongest hold, stretch the tape as you apply it, overlap each pass, and press the finished layers firmly together to encourage them to fuse.

Secure Contact Staff Flowers

Silicone tape is our preferred way to secure Contact Staff Flowers. Apply a layer of tape to the staff first, tightly wrap the flower around it, then finish with additional silicone tape around the base of the flower. This gives the flower a grippy foundation while helping prevent the finished wrap from loosening during use.

Our newer Contact Staff Flowers also include a pin-locking system for 7/8 inch (22 mm) staffs, but we still recommend finishing the installation with silicone tape for additional security.

Finish & Protect Fire Props

Black silicone tape is useful for finishing the ends of fire contact staffs, dragon staffs, and other compatible fire props. It can cover exposed areas around transitions and create a heat-resistant silicone barrier over sections that would otherwise leave metal exposed. Exposed metal is one of the most common ways to get burned when fire dancing (not the actual kevlar).

When wrapping a transition point, overlap the tape across the center of the area rather than stopping directly at the joint. This gives the wrap more material to fuse to on either side.

For fire prop care and safe use, read our Fire Prop Maintenance Guide, Fire Safety Guide, and Safety Disclaimer.

Clear Tape for LED Props

Clear silicone tape is useful when working around illuminated props because its translucent construction allows light to remain visible through the wrapped area. It can be used for compatible repairs, securing components, and other applications where opaque black tape would interrupt the lighting effect.

Can It Be Used as Staff Grip?

Technically, yes, but it usually isn’t our first choice for a full staff. Dedicated Silicone Tube Grip provides a cleaner and more consistent gripping surface for most contact and dragon staffs.

Silicone tape can still work well for smaller gripping applications such as contact levi wands. Apply it evenly to avoid creating unnecessary differences in thickness or weight around the prop. It is not as durable as tubing but will get the job done for smaller props.

SKU CAAST Category Brand:

Flow toys are props and tools used in flow arts, which is a movement based art-form that involves object manipulation. Flow props are extensions of your body and tools for self expression.

Despite being called “toys”, flow toys are meant for everyone and you will find that a majority of flow artists are actually adults! Contemporary flow arts include many modalities like dance, martial arts, or just “free-flow.”

The best flow toy to start with is the one that you’re most excited to learn. Although some props might be more difficult to learn than others, this differs greatly from one person to another. We found that the more excited you are to learn a specific prop, the more likely you will be to practice and learn quickly.

Stick props like dragon staff, contact staff, or spin staff can be easier for some since its a more static prop that you can hold onto. Rope props like poi and rope dart require more plane control at the beginning but are also much easier to travel with. Others like flow stars and pixel whips have their own kind of movements that don’t really fall into the other two categories we mentioned. But they’re super popular for ravers and festival goers!

We have a feeling you’ll end up owning more than one type of prop though so regardless of what your friend thinks is the best flow toy to start with, just get whatever you’re most excited to learn!

Fire dancing carries some inherent risks, but if you follow all of our fire safety instructions the risks are very avoidable. We recommend feeling super comfortable with a flow toy before lighting it on fire for the first time.

If you’re new to flow arts, we also recommend getting a daytime practice prop (or even LED prop) since you might be dropping your flow toy a lot when you’re first learning. The Kevlar on fire props can deteriorate much more quickly from repetitive drops, so practice props are ideal to keep them safe.

We have fire, LED, and daytime versions of most of our main props. Even if you can only afford one version and end up starting with a fire prop, they can be protected with wick covers. No matter what type you have, we recommend practicing on soft ground like grass to protect them as much as possible.

After you read the fire safety guide linked above and before lighting up you fire tool, please also read through our safety disclaimer.

We ship our products Monday-Friday from Los Angeles, CA, USA. Many of our listed products are ready-to-ship unless we have to assemble them, which can add a day or two to process. That being said, we ship out orders in the order they are placed within 1-2 business days (with some exceptions like holiday seasons).

Once shipped, we use USPS for orders in the USA and usually UPS for all international orders. Ground shipping in the US usually takes about 3-5 business days from shipping date, while priority shipping can be between 1-3 business days from shipping date. These are estimations and not guarantees as USPS might have delays, but reach out to us if you are looking for more specific time frames!

We can’t promise any specific shipping timeframes for international delivery as customs can cause many unforeseen delays.

Of course! We’re just a text, email, or DM away from being able to answer any question you have. All of our contact details can be found here or you can scroll down to find the buttons in our footer. We’re active on social media too so we are pretty easy to get a hold of!

Stick props such as dragon, contact, double, and spin staffs, levi-wands, and devil sticks generally need to be regripped over their lifetime. Some of the most common grips are silicone and EPDM. Staff flowers are also used to slow down the rotational speed and add weight to the staff ends, which is very useful for contact manipulation. Silicone tape is also commonly used to seal the ends of the grips on stick props or for added safety near the wicks of fire props so that there is no exposed metals. Other accessories also include wick covers or carry bags for collapsible props (or any props up to 29″).
