Our California State Fire Marshal Approved Fire Safety Blanket is built specifically for fire flow arts using 100% densely woven wool selected for fire safety applications. The material is inherently flame resistant without relying on added flame-retardant chemicals and is approved for use by the California State Fire Marshal.

Each blanket measures approximately 2 x 3 ft (61 x 91 cm) and weighs approximately 15 oz (425 g). The dense wool construction creates a substantial safety blanket for extinguishing fire props while remaining compact enough to keep nearby during practice, performances, and fire jams.

Inherently Flame Resistant

Unlike fabrics that depend on an applied flame-retardant treatment, the flame resistance of this material is inherent to the material itself. There are no added flame-retardant chemicals that need to remain on the surface for the material to maintain its rated flame-resistant properties.

This also means the flame resistance does not simply wash out if the material gets wet or is cleaned. For fire performers who regularly use their safety equipment outdoors, around fuel, and in less-than-pristine environments, that’s a pretty useful distinction.

California State Fire Marshal Approved Material

The material used to construct these blankets is approved for use by the California State Fire Marshal. It is classified as an inherently flame-resistant material, meaning its flame resistance is a property of the material rather than the result of an applied chemical flame-retardant treatment.

For professional performers, venues, and event organizers that require documented fire-resistant safety equipment, the CSFM approval provides a verifiable reference for the material used to construct the blanket.

Dense 100% Wool Construction

These blankets are made from densely woven 100% wool and are substantially heavier and thicker than many lightweight fabrics commonly used as fire safety blankets in the flow arts community.

Many performers casually refer to any black fire safety cloth as a “duvetyne,” but this blanket is not made from duvetyne. We chose a dense wool material specifically because it provides inherent flame resistance without depending on an applied flame-retardant chemical treatment.

Made for Fire Flow Arts

A fire safety blanket is one of the basic pieces of safety equipment that should be present whenever practicing or performing with fire props. It can be used to smother and extinguish wicks after a burn without introducing water to the prop.

The 2 x 3 ft (61 x 91 cm) size provides enough material for extinguishing common flow props while remaining manageable for a trained fire safety to handle quickly.

For more information on setting up a responsible fire practice, read our Fire Safety for Flow Arts guide. Please also review our Safety Disclaimer before working with fire props.

Cleaning & Care

The inherent flame resistance of the wool does not wash out, but that does not mean the blanket is maintenance-free. Dust, oils, fuel residue, and other contaminants can accumulate in the material and may reduce its flame-resistant performance over time.

For routine cleaning, we generally recommend keeping things simple. If needed, the blanket can be rinsed outdoors and allowed to air dry completely. This can be particularly practical for a blanket that has accumulated soot or residue from extinguishing fueled props and keeps that mess out of your washing machine.

Repeated washing can also contribute to normal physical wear, so there is little reason to wash the blanket unnecessarily. Regularly inspect your safety blanket for contamination, excessive wear, holes, thinning, or other damage, and replace it if its condition makes you question whether it is still suitable for fire safety use.

As with all fire safety equipment, proper equipment is only one part of the equation. A fire safety blanket should be readily accessible during fire practice and used by someone familiar with safely extinguishing fire props.

SKU BFCFSB Category Brand:

Flow toys are props and tools used in flow arts, which is a movement based art-form that involves object manipulation. Flow props are extensions of your body and tools for self expression.

Despite being called “toys”, flow toys are meant for everyone and you will find that a majority of flow artists are actually adults! Contemporary flow arts include many modalities like dance, martial arts, or just “free-flow.”

The best flow toy to start with is the one that you’re most excited to learn. Although some props might be more difficult to learn than others, this differs greatly from one person to another. We found that the more excited you are to learn a specific prop, the more likely you will be to practice and learn quickly.

Stick props like dragon staff, contact staff, or spin staff can be easier for some since its a more static prop that you can hold onto. Rope props like poi and rope dart require more plane control at the beginning but are also much easier to travel with. Others like flow stars and pixel whips have their own kind of movements that don’t really fall into the other two categories we mentioned. But they’re super popular for ravers and festival goers!

We have a feeling you’ll end up owning more than one type of prop though so regardless of what your friend thinks is the best flow toy to start with, just get whatever you’re most excited to learn!

Fire dancing carries some inherent risks, but if you follow all of our fire safety instructions the risks are very avoidable. We recommend feeling super comfortable with a flow toy before lighting it on fire for the first time.

If you’re new to flow arts, we also recommend getting a daytime practice prop (or even LED prop) since you might be dropping your flow toy a lot when you’re first learning. The Kevlar on fire props can deteriorate much more quickly from repetitive drops, so practice props are ideal to keep them safe.

We have fire, LED, and daytime versions of most of our main props. Even if you can only afford one version and end up starting with a fire prop, they can be protected with wick covers. No matter what type you have, we recommend practicing on soft ground like grass to protect them as much as possible.

After you read the fire safety guide linked above and before lighting up you fire tool, please also read through our safety disclaimer.

We ship our products Monday-Friday from Los Angeles, CA, USA. Many of our listed products are ready-to-ship unless we have to assemble them, which can add a day or two to process. That being said, we ship out orders in the order they are placed within 1-2 business days (with some exceptions like holiday seasons).

Once shipped, we use USPS for orders in the USA and usually UPS for all international orders. Ground shipping in the US usually takes about 3-5 business days from shipping date, while priority shipping can be between 1-3 business days from shipping date. These are estimations and not guarantees as USPS might have delays, but reach out to us if you are looking for more specific time frames!

We can’t promise any specific shipping timeframes for international delivery as customs can cause many unforeseen delays.

Of course! We’re just a text, email, or DM away from being able to answer any question you have. All of our contact details can be found here or you can scroll down to find the buttons in our footer. We’re active on social media too so we are pretty easy to get a hold of!

Safety blankets are one of the three pillars of fire safety! Although they are generally called “duvetyne,” duvetyne is not the only material they can be made of. We have thoroughly tested our safety blankets to ensure they are safe to use on fire props. That being said, all blankets wear down over time and need to be replaced. Be sure not to spill fuel on them, as this creates a hazardous condition.

Avoid putting out freshly dipped fire props on the blanket because it will reduce the blanket’s lifespan. This is because freshly dipped props have a lot of fuel on them compared to fire props at the end of their burn. The fuel can accidentally be lit the next time you use the blanket, and fuel also causes the materials to wear out more quickly. Other accessories include wick covers, prop straps and bags, flow grease, and earplugs.
