These fire rope dart leashes are designed specifically for fire spinners who want a safe and strong tether. They are available in two high performance rope options: Technora and Dyneema.

Both materials are widely used in demanding industrial and aerospace applications because of their exceptional strength and durability. They offer extremely high tensile strength with very low stretch, giving you precise control during wraps, tosses, and technical rope dart movement.

Technora Rope Dart Leash

Technora is a high temperature resistant aramid fiber known for extreme strength and chemical resistance. It has even been used in aerospace applications such as suspending NASA’s Mars rover Opportunity from its parachute during descent.

This makes Technora an excellent material for fire spinning. Unlike most synthetic ropes, Technora does not melt and can withstand very high temperatures. Because the entire leash is made from Technora, it is generally the more forgiving option if the rope becomes tangled while spinning.

For this reason Technora is often the preferred option for beginners or anyone who wants a low maintenance fire rope dart leash.

Dyneema Rope Dart Leash

Dyneema is an ultra high molecular weight polyethylene fiber that is incredibly strong while remaining extremely lightweight. On a weight for weight basis it can be up to fifteen times stronger than steel. It is commonly used in racing, high performance rigging, and other applications where maximum strength with minimal weight is required.

Dyneema rope has a relatively low melting point compared to Technora. Because of this, our Dyneema rope dart leashes include a Technora lead section between the rope and the hardware that attaches to the fire dart head. This heat resistant section protects the Dyneema rope from direct exposure to flame.

If a Dyneema leash becomes tangled while spinning fire, the rope can potentially melt. When this happens it can create small hardened plastic beads along the rope that make it uncomfortable to flow with. For this reason Dyneema tends to work best for spinners who are comfortable controlling their dart and avoiding tangles during fire spinning.

Some performers prefer Dyneema because it can feel smoother on the skin compared to Technora ropes. However, newer Technora lines have improved a lot in this regard, so the choice often comes down to personal preference.

The Dyneema rope we use is not coated. Some Dyneema ropes on the market include a coating that must be broken in before the rope feels comfortable to spin with. Our uncoated Dyneema comes ready to use right away.

Leash Design

Each leash measures approximately 10.5 feet and can easily be shortened by tying loops near the handle end to match your preferred rope dart length. A swivel at the end allows you to attach your rope dart head using a quick link while preventing the rope from twisting during spins.

Flow toys are props and tools used in flow arts, which is a movement based art-form that involves object manipulation. Flow props are extensions of your body and tools for self expression.

Despite being called “toys”, flow toys are meant for everyone and you will find that a majority of flow artists are actually adults! Contemporary flow arts include many modalities like dance, martial arts, or just “free-flow.”

The best flow toy to start with is the one that you’re most excited to learn. Although some props might be more difficult to learn than others, this differs greatly from one person to another. We found that the more excited you are to learn a specific prop, the more likely you will be to practice and learn quickly.

Stick props like dragon staff, contact staff, or spin staff can be easier for some since its a more static prop that you can hold onto. Rope props like poi and rope dart require more plane control at the beginning but are also much easier to travel with. Others like flow stars and pixel whips have their own kind of movements that don’t really fall into the other two categories we mentioned. But they’re super popular for ravers and festival goers!

We have a feeling you’ll end up owning more than one type of prop though so regardless of what your friend thinks is the best flow toy to start with, just get whatever you’re most excited to learn!

Fire dancing carries some inherent risks, but if you follow all of our fire safety instructions the risks are very avoidable. We recommend feeling super comfortable with a flow toy before lighting it on fire for the first time.

If you’re new to flow arts, we also recommend getting a daytime practice prop (or even LED prop) since you might be dropping your flow toy a lot when you’re first learning. The Kevlar on fire props can deteriorate much more quickly from repetitive drops, so practice props are ideal to keep them safe.

We have fire, LED, and daytime versions of most of our main props. Even if you can only afford one version and end up starting with a fire prop, they can be protected with wick covers. No matter what type you have, we recommend practicing on soft ground like grass to protect them as much as possible.
