Primal Grip is a high-traction overgrip designed for flow artists who want exceptional control without adding excessive bulk to their staff. Its unique micro-textured surface uses thousands of tiny flexible gripping fingers to create impressive friction while remaining soft and comfortable against the skin.

Unlike traditional rubber grips that rely primarily on surface tackiness, Primal Grip uses its specialized texture to help resist slipping, even in sweaty or humid conditions. Its thin, flexible construction makes it an excellent option for contact staffs, dragon staffs, spin staffs, double staffs, and other flow props where maintaining a secure connection with the body is essential.

Micro-Textured Grip

What makes Primal Grip different is its surface. Thousands of microscopic, flexible gripping fingers create a high-friction texture that helps the material maintain contact with skin, clothing, and other surfaces.

This provides excellent traction without requiring excessive pressure, making Primal Grip particularly useful for contact spinning techniques where the staff needs to maintain friction against different parts of the body.

Excellent Traction in Wet Conditions

Primal Grip maintains excellent friction in both dry and wet conditions, making it particularly appealing for outdoor performances, humid environments, and sweaty practice sessions.

The micro-textured surface creates a distinctly different feel from conventional silicone, EPDM, and natural rubber staff grips, giving flow artists another option when maximum traction is the priority.

Designed as an Overgrip

Primal Grip is intended to be installed over an existing grip or an adhesive-backed foam strip rather than used as the primary cushioning layer directly over bare staff tubing. The underlying layer provides padding and structure, while Primal Grip provides the high-traction outer surface.

For Bonobo Flow staff builds, we recommend installing Primal Grip over EPDM Grip. First grip the staff normally with EPDM, then spiral-wrap Primal Grip over the finished surface. Because Primal Grip already has a pressure-sensitive adhesive backing, no additional adhesive is needed between the EPDM and the overgrip.

This combination gives you the cushioning and structure of EPDM with the aggressive micro-textured traction of Primal Grip on the outside.

Thin, Flexible & Comfortable

Primal Grip combines a soft thermoplastic elastomer gripping surface with a flexible backing that conforms easily around an existing staff grip. Its relatively thin profile allows you to add substantial traction without dramatically increasing the finished diameter of your staff.

Each roll contains 15 ft (4.57 m) of 1 inch (25 mm) wide material, giving you plenty of length for wrapping flow props and replacing worn sections as needed.

Installing Primal Grip

Start with a properly installed base grip or adhesive-backed foam layer. Peel away the release liner as you spiral-wrap Primal Grip over the surface, keeping the wrap even and consistent as you work down the staff.

Avoid excessively stretching the material during installation. Once finished, firmly press the material against the underlying grip to help the pressure-sensitive adhesive establish a secure bond.

Made for Flow Props

Primal Grip is particularly well suited for contact staffs and dragon staffs, where friction plays a major role in maintaining control during body rolls, balances, and rotational movements. It can also be used on other compatible flow props where additional traction is desired.

For a comparison of EPDM, silicone, F-Grip, and other staff grip options, check out our Staff Grip Guide.

Easy Maintenance

The micro-textured surface can collect lint, dust, and other debris over time. A lint roller works well for quickly removing loose particles and restoring a cleaner gripping surface.

For more substantial cleaning, gently clean the surface with mild detergent and cool to warm water. Avoid harsh cleaners and excessive heat that could damage the gripping surface or adhesive.

Primal Grip vs. Other Micro-Textured Staff Grips

If you’ve encountered names such as Gecko Grip from Flow on Fire, Sage Grip from Wizard of Flow, or Black Pyrate Grip from Ninja Pyrate while searching for high-traction staff grip, Primal Grip belongs to this same style of micro-textured overgrip. We offer it as Primal Grip in 15 ft (4.57 m) rolls specifically for wrapping contact staffs, dragon staffs, and other flow props.

SKU CAAPG Category Brand:

Flow toys are props and tools used in flow arts, which is a movement based art-form that involves object manipulation. Flow props are extensions of your body and tools for self expression.

Despite being called “toys”, flow toys are meant for everyone and you will find that a majority of flow artists are actually adults! Contemporary flow arts include many modalities like dance, martial arts, or just “free-flow.”

The best flow toy to start with is the one that you’re most excited to learn. Although some props might be more difficult to learn than others, this differs greatly from one person to another. We found that the more excited you are to learn a specific prop, the more likely you will be to practice and learn quickly.

Stick props like dragon staff, contact staff, or spin staff can be easier for some since its a more static prop that you can hold onto. Rope props like poi and rope dart require more plane control at the beginning but are also much easier to travel with. Others like flow stars and pixel whips have their own kind of movements that don’t really fall into the other two categories we mentioned. But they’re super popular for ravers and festival goers!

We have a feeling you’ll end up owning more than one type of prop though so regardless of what your friend thinks is the best flow toy to start with, just get whatever you’re most excited to learn!

Fire dancing carries some inherent risks, but if you follow all of our fire safety instructions the risks are very avoidable. We recommend feeling super comfortable with a flow toy before lighting it on fire for the first time.

If you’re new to flow arts, we also recommend getting a daytime practice prop (or even LED prop) since you might be dropping your flow toy a lot when you’re first learning. The Kevlar on fire props can deteriorate much more quickly from repetitive drops, so practice props are ideal to keep them safe.

We have fire, LED, and daytime versions of most of our main props. Even if you can only afford one version and end up starting with a fire prop, they can be protected with wick covers. No matter what type you have, we recommend practicing on soft ground like grass to protect them as much as possible.

After you read the fire safety guide linked above and before lighting up you fire tool, please also read through our safety disclaimer.

We ship our products Monday-Friday from Los Angeles, CA, USA. Many of our listed products are ready-to-ship unless we have to assemble them, which can add a day or two to process. That being said, we ship out orders in the order they are placed within 1-2 business days (with some exceptions like holiday seasons).

Once shipped, we use USPS for orders in the USA and usually UPS for all international orders. Ground shipping in the US usually takes about 3-5 business days from shipping date, while priority shipping can be between 1-3 business days from shipping date. These are estimations and not guarantees as USPS might have delays, but reach out to us if you are looking for more specific time frames!

We can’t promise any specific shipping timeframes for international delivery as customs can cause many unforeseen delays.

Of course! We’re just a text, email, or DM away from being able to answer any question you have. All of our contact details can be found here or you can scroll down to find the buttons in our footer. We’re active on social media too so we are pretty easy to get a hold of!

Stick props such as dragon, contact, double, and spin staffs, levi-wands, and devil sticks generally need to be regripped over their lifetime. Some of the most common grips are silicone and EPDM. Staff flowers are also used to slow down the rotational speed and add weight to the staff ends, which is very useful for contact manipulation. Silicone tape is also commonly used to seal the ends of the grips on stick props or for added safety near the wicks of fire props so that there is no exposed metals. Other accessories also include wick covers or carry bags for collapsible props (or any props up to 29″).
