Installing dragon staff spokes should be easy. And it is—as long as you know how to do it right and don’t overtighten things like you’re arm-wrestling your gear into submission. This guide breaks it down step-by-step, so your dragon staff doesn’t shoot flaming spokes into the void mid-spin.
Most commercially available dragon staff hubs (think Threeworlds, Fusion, and Gora) use a simple system: 3mm grub screws paired with spokes that feature a 8mm rod at the base.
If your hub doesn’t fit that description—like Flowbonacci hubs—scroll down for a special section just for you.
Standard Grub Screw Setup: The Essentials
If you’re using a hub that takes 3mm grub screws (Fusion, Threeworlds, Gora), here’s how to install your spokes like a pro:
Loosen the Grub Screws First
Don’t shove the spoke in while the screw is still jammed halfway into the channel. Loosen it up so the 8mm rod can slide all the way in. You don’t have to fully remove the screw—just back it out enough to clear space.
⚠️ If your spoke isn’t fully inserted before tightening, it can fly out. And yes, that’s just as bad as it sounds.
Insert the Spoke Fully
Make sure it seats completely into the hub channel. You should feel it bottom out. If you don’t, stop and check if the grub screw is still in the way.
Tighten (But Don’t Hulk Out)
Tighten the grub screw until it stops. That’s it. Do not force it tighter or you risk stripping the screw, and nobody wants to dig out a stripped grub during setup at sunset.
Removing the Spokes
Easy. Just loosen the grub screws until the spoke falls out. Reminder: don’t fully remove the screw unless you like chasing hardware in the grass. Keep them in the hub if possible.

Pro Tip: Use Threadlocker
Threeworlds includes blue threadlocker on their grub screws, which helps prevent things from loosening mid-spin. You can:
- Buy treated extras, or
- Make your own: order a box of 3mm grub screws and apply your own non-permanent (blue) threadlocker.
Important: Threadlocker only cures in the absence of oxygen. So apply it, screw the grubs into the hub, and let it sit for 24 hours before using or removing.

Special Note: Gora’s Push-In System
Some Gora hubs use a clever design that lets you push/pull spokes in and out without a ton of fiddling with the grub screws every time. Neat, right?
Even so, we still recommend tightening them down when spinning with fire. “Cool engineering” is nice. “Burning spokes flying off at 2AM” is less nice.
For the Flowbonacci Fam
The Flowbonacci system uses bolts and washers, not grub screws.
Here’s the deal:
- Lay the Flowbonacci head on top of the hub and line up the holes
- Place washers on the 3 holes
- Tighten the bolts into the holes until snug, but don’t overtighten, especially if you’re using the newer plug hubs—those can deform if the nut is pulled too hard through the back
- You want just a few millimeters of bolt sticking out the other side—that’s your sweet spot
- RECAP: Bolts, Washers, Head, Hub
TL;DR: Dragon Staff Spoke Install Checklist ✅
- Loosen grub screws enough for full spoke insertion
- Insert spokes all the way—don’t half-send it
- Tighten just until snug and secure (don’t overtighten)
- Use blue threadlocker if you want extra security
- Don’t lose your grub screws—keep them screwed into the hub even when disassembled
- If you’re using bolts (Flowbonacci): washer goes between bolt head and hub, tighten gently but firmly

No matter your setup, the most important rule of dragon staff building is don’t rush it. Take 5 minutes to do it right, and your gear will thank you (and not explode mid-throw).
